Bunions & hammertoes
Toe deformities that cause pain, rubbing, or pressure in shoes
Bunions and hammertoes are two of the most common structural changes that affect the toes. A bunion forms when the joint at the base of the big toe becomes enlarged and pushes the toe sideways. A hammertoe occurs when one of the smaller toes bends abnormally at the middle joint.
These conditions can cause pain, stiffness, and irritation from shoes. Over time, they may make walking more difficult or lead to skin problems like corns or calluses.
Common Questions about Bunions & hammertoes
What causes bunions and hammertoes?
They often develop due to inherited foot shape, joint instability, arthritis, or pressure from tight or narrow shoes. They can also appear after injury.
Do they always get worse over time?
Not always, but they often become more painful or noticeable with age or continued pressure. Early treatment may help slow the progression.
Are bunions and hammertoes the same thing
No. A bunion affects the joint at the base of the big toe, while a hammertoe bends in the middle of one of the smaller toes.
What are non-surgical treatment options?
Padding, shoe modifications, orthotics, and splinting can reduce pressure and relieve discomfort. These options don’t correct the deformity but may help with symptoms.
When is surgery considered?
Surgery is considered when pain limits daily activity and other treatments haven’t helped. There are different procedures depending on the severity and joint alignment.
Can I prevent them from forming?
Wearing properly fitted, supportive shoes and managing conditions like flat feet may help reduce the risk, especially if you have a family history.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the severity of the deformity and how much pain it causes. We may recommend:
- Shoe modifications with wider toe boxes
- Pads or cushions to relieve pressure
- Custom orthotics to improve alignment
- Splints or toe separators
- Surgical correction when symptoms persist
