Sprained ankle

A twisted ankle that causes pain, swelling, or bruising

A sprained ankle happens when the ligaments that support the joint are stretched or torn, usually from a fall, twist, or misstep. This can lead to swelling, bruising, and difficulty putting weight on the foot.

Sprains vary in severity. Mild injuries may heal with rest, while more serious tears can cause long-term instability if not treated properly. Early diagnosis helps prevent repeated sprains and supports a full recovery.

Common Questions about Sprained ankle

What causes a sprained ankle?

Sprains usually happen when the foot rolls inward or outward, overstretching the ligaments. Common causes include uneven surfaces, sports, or missing a step.

What are the symptoms?

Pain, swelling, bruising, and trouble walking are common. In more severe cases, the ankle may feel unstable or weak.

How do I know it’s not broken?

A sprain and a fracture can feel similar. We use a physical exam and often X-rays to check for broken bones.

How long does it take to heal?

Mild sprains can improve in a few days. Moderate or severe sprains may take several weeks to months to fully heal.

What happens if I don’t treat it?

Without proper treatment, the joint can remain unstable, which increases the risk of future sprains or long-term joint damage.

When should I see a doctor?

If pain or swelling doesn’t improve after a few days, or if you can’t walk on it, it’s best to be evaluated.

Treatment Options

Treatment for ankle sprains depends on the severity. We may recommend:

  • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
  • Bracing or a walking boot
  • Physical therapy to restore strength and balance
  • Activity modifications during healing
  • Surgery for chronic instability or severe tears

We evaluate and treat sprained ankles in all of our offices.
